Ragedara Graphite Mine was the world’s biggest graphite producer until the end of the Second World War and according to the British Mining Registry it was the No. 1 Graphite Mine in Sri Lanka. During that time, the mine had produced 18ktpa at its peak annually. Furthermore, Ragedara Mine of Sri Lanka had supplied the most of the demand for high purity crystalline graphite during the Industrial Revolution and World War I & II.
The graphite mineralization at Ragedara mine is natural crystalline type with the largest vein observed on site reaching close to 2m in width. Average vein width is estimated at 30 – 50 cm and average length is 25m. Graphite from Ragedara was tested as the purest vein graphite in the world (Analytical Reports of Superior Graphite and SGS). These veins typically show needle-like macro morphology and flake-like micro morphology.
Ragedara Mine has the most concentrated number of veins in the country and it had more than 30 individually separated graphite Pits (Shafts) in it’s own land. At present, we are running only one major pit. Currently our main operating levels are at 53ft, 125ft ,183ft and 276ft. We follow open stopping and overhand cut and fill mining method with 8-hour single shift whereas we can expand it to 3 shifts. We are use air driven jack hammers and pneumatic overshot loader to enable mechanize mucking and improve tunneling efficiency and productivity drastically. Safety is the first priority while working under difficult conditions. The staff is well trained and are provided with light and are always given proper equipment while being trained to handle it.
Currently we produce around 100 tons with a single shift under Covid-19 health guidelines with less than 100 employees. In addition we maintain more than 1000 tons of raw material for a smooth operation.
Ragedara Mine is one of the world’s purest vein graphite producers in Sri Lanka. It had been in operation since the early 18th century. The Graphite from Ragedara was tested and was found to be the purest graphite vein in the world. At present, we mine ultra-pure highly crystalline vein graphite with 97% to 99% range of carbon. Over the years, it has been renowned for its superior quality and uniqueness.
The Ragedara mine is administrated by a team of skillful managers, mining, processing & maintenance engineers, and our Board of Directors consist of mainly German qualified engineers.
Since the 18th century, we have had a powerful trademark in Graphite industry. Ragedara Mine has the most concentrated number of veins in the country and it had more than 30 individually separated graphite Pits (Shafts) in it’s our own land. The deepest operating level at Ragedara Mine is at 276ft. Whereas the depths of other main operating graphite mines in Sri Lanka are at 1800ft and 2600ft.
We are strongly believing in sustainable technology which will work in harmony with nature instead of creating pollution and waste. Graphite and Graphene are raw material that can make such a Vision a reality.
Several leading companies in the graphite trade have tested our material and it is highly recommended for NANO technology, Conductive graphite, Batteries, Lubricants, Graphene etc. Energy absorption, storage and release ( discharge) of our graphite is very promising at those tests. Ragedara Graphite is very much similar to synthetic quality graphite where the COP would be very much less and environment friendly.
Graphite formation at Ragedara had taken place under ideal conditions so that the mono-crystal size is much larger and the impurity in the vein is separated due to perfect crystallization process. Due to very large mono-crystals, this has been identified as one of the most promising raw material for “Graphene” production. Therefore the quality of the Graphene made from Ragedara Graphite is very high while the production cost of Graphene is reasonable.
The report of Sri Lanka Nanotechnology Institute observed a strong resemblance between our vein graphite and expensive synthetic graphite, making Ragedara Graphite suitable and a useful material for the production of batteries.
